Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site

Designed and built by Canadians, the Sault Canal incorporates several engineering innovations. Enjoy a guided tour or a self-guided walk of the site. Heritage interpreters are on hand to answer questions.

When completed in 1895, the Sault Ste. Marie Canal was the world’s longest lock and the first to operate using electricity. The site is a great spot for boat-watching, picnics, and a variety of other activities.
